Atomization

The process whereby liquid fuel is broken up into tiny
droplets prior to combustion in an engine. Reduced
droplet size makes the air: fuel mixture behave more
as if it were a homogenous mixture. which is why
extreme injection pressures (in excess of 1500 bar}
are used in modem common rail diesel engines.
Evaporation of the atomized fuel also cools the inlet
charge and is an important part of the thermal
management of petrol engines operating at high
load.
